The Power of Dialogue

The Power of Dialogue

Creating a personalised career plan is challenging. There is an abundance of conflicting information that may or may not serve your individual circumstances, especially for those exploring non-traditional pathways. However, for those willing to share their dreams, passions and ideas with experts, there is an opportunity to uncover valuable insights. At Workskills Tasmania, Samantha, our experienced in-house learning and development mentor, recognises the transformative power of such interactions.

Often, individuals hesitate to seek out and open up to those more experienced than themselves, but Samantha underscores the importance of overcoming such inhibitions. “A world of possibilities awaits through one-on-one conversations, whether gaining fresh perspectives, invaluable insights or evaluating risks”. Seeking constructive feedback and advice from trusted and experienced sources can be a great place to start or continue your journey.

Samantha’s own experiences beautifully exemplify the power of open dialogue. She recounts two of her fascinating encounters recently with students harbouring aspirations for unconventional careers.

A student of materials and design technology expressed a keen interest in combining his passion for boats and history. After further discussions and research, Samantha discovered the Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin. Nestled on the picturesque banks of the Huon River in Tasmania, the Wooden Boat Centre works with the age-old craft of boat building. It delves into the rich history of boats and their construction. The significance of Huon pine in history adds an extra layer of importance to this special place. Samantha encouraged the student to explore the centre, where he could enrol in various courses imbued with the stories and heritage of the past.

Likewise, Samantha encountered another student with a unique interest in filming fishing. While initially unfamiliar with the concept, Samantha’s experience and expertise enabled her to recognise the need for a strategic approach. She advised the student to compile a comprehensive list of fishing retailers in the area, understand their needs, and tailor resumes to each prospective employer. This approach would pave the way for the student to pursue filming fishing as a freelance profession, network with fishermen, and approach fishing enthusiasts. These anecdotes vividly highlight the transformative power of uninhibited expression, proactive research, and the ability to tailor one’s approach to uncover a meaningful career path.

Moreover, sharing thoughts with an expert catalyses builds confidence and understanding of career risks. “It is natural to experience uncertainty and self-doubt when embarking on a new venture or project. However, by seeking the wisdom and reassurance of seasoned professionals, you can gain the conviction needed to navigate uncharted waters.” says Samantha.

“It also creates opportunities to forge valuable connections and networks. Engaging with experts in your field lays the groundwork for potential collaborations, partnerships, and even new career prospects. Seizing the chance to attend job expos and resourceful events and reaching out to industry providers can yield unexpected and enriching outcomes,” Samantha further adds.

Even the most accomplished professionals were once beginners. So, do not hesitate to seek guidance and support as you wish to grow and develop in your chosen field.

“Remember, the role of experts and mentors to guide you, use their experience to shape your ideas. It is through this process that can help unlock your thoughts and bring you closer to your goals. They are there to ensure that they have all the necessary information before offering suggestions and advice. So, trust in the process and let your ideas shine, and discover new possibilities.” Samantha affirmed.

Whether you’re a mentor or just starting your journey, there is a real and tangible benefit in supporting people to achieve their goals. At Workskills, we encourage our participants and employees to explore opportunities for growth and advancement in order to realise their full potential.
