Tania – Workskills Tasmania’s Program Support Manager, Offers Participants a Guide to Manage the Newness

Sustainable Employment

After the excitement of landing a new job, many of us tend to focus solely on the achievement itself, neglecting to consider what comes next. At Workskills Tasmania, our approach goes beyond simply securing employment. We guide our program participants to ensure a holistic and successful journey to sustainable employment.

Tania, our Program Support Manager, and her team play a pivotal role in helping our participants navigate the new world of employment, and she puts it across straight and simple for the participants to manage the ‘new job’ experience with more control.

“When working towards gaining employment, your focus should extend beyond the job offer itself. It’s crucial to consider how to sustain the job you’ve worked hard to secure and consider what positive contributions you can make to the workplace culture, other than the job itself,” says Tania.

To make the journey smoother, your sessions with Employer Services Officers and Placement Officers lay the foundation by ensuring you get the complete information about a job opportunity, the business and your role. The approach emphasises our motto of the right job, the right person, and the right fit. This, in fact, eliminates a lot of hurdles ahead for you as we match you with a job suitable for you and whom you could hit it off well from the get-go.

“You can rest assured knowing that a lot of thought and process went behind your placement and celebrate the fact you have come this far with great confidence. But to enjoy the fruits of your own hard work, you must maintain the same positive attitude, flexibility and eagerness.”

Additionally, we make the participants aware of the resources available to them to assist with handling the post-placement jitters. Perhaps one could also consider this the new comprehensive guide that covers the essential aspects of post-placement scenarios:

First-Day Behaviour:

Arriving early, dressing appropriate to the job or the industry, and maintaining approachability is key to making a positive impression. Asking questions, showing enthusiasm, and actively listening demonstrate your willingness to learn and adapt to the business environment.

“You can easily avoid a lot of unwanted feelings once you make yourself part of the business. Use the initial days to understand your role thoroughly, understanding the business environment and culture, and build strong relationships with colleagues or the business owners.”

Professional Ethics and Etiquette:

Upholding basic professional standards is universal, regardless of the job. Respect confidentiality, be punctual, and communicate professionally. Avoid gossip and minimise personal device use during work hours.

“Respecting the time of your colleagues and the business owner is very important, and know that every job is different. So, be open to your manager’s approach of work and learn new procedures that fits the business right.”

Managing discomfort:

Feeling overwhelmed starting a new job is normal. You can always seek guidance from your coach, program support team, or Post Placement Field Officers to help with the necessary paperwork, protective gear or work wear. This post-placement support is available to troubleshoot unexpected issues.

“Sorting the things that are bothering you beforehand by discussing with your coaches/mentors can help you handle your feelings better. As participants you can completely use your energies to build your workplace relationships and skills, which will gradually enable you to forget about the feeling of newness and nervousness.”

Conflict Resolution:

Tania advises approaching situations calmly and professionally when conflicts arise. Moreover, consistency in communication is crucial, ensuring both your program coach and workplace manager are well-informed. If and when it is needed, Workskills’ Post-placement support team or the company’s HR can assist in resolving conflicts.

“Make sure your program coach, as well as the manager at the workplace, are rightly and fully informed about your reasons and problems. Knowing the correct information helps your coach to work towards finding mutually agreeable solutions.”

Embracing feedback:

Feedback is a valuable tool for personal growth. Request regular feedback from your supervisor, and be open to constructive criticism. Continuously seek opportunities for self-improvement, as it is key to long-term success in your career.

“Engage in interactions genuinely, be mindful about the business needs, and foster camaraderie.

Tania further emphasises the power of positive thinking, whether you are a newcomer to the employment sector or a seasoned professional.

“Stay positive, remain adaptable, and commit to personal and professional growth. Your dedication to these principles will set a strong basis for a successful career.”

Remember, our coaches or post-placement field officers are always there for you, to guide and support you as you settle into your new role. Ensuring that you not only maintain your employment but also thrive in your new workplace. Utilise the support and resources you have, and you’ll be able to navigate this better than you think today!
